Every Blog Should Have a Special Purpose, Right?

This blog has a purpose. Probably, it is mostly for me to quantify the ways in which I spend my time. This will give me something to show for it! I seem to always have some nugget of shopping goodness, internet deal, travel tip, kids activity, or something on my mind, so this little place will be the one location where I can share and keep it all!

This summer has already been an exciting one for me and my little family. My husband, Mr. Incredible, and I have three amazing children, all ages 3 and younger. We like living La Vida Loca! Every week we go on an outing to a fun place in the Northern Utah/Idaho area, and I'll be sharing my ideas for the best, most fun, and least expensive outings for those like me with small children, to do!

Today's review is from a few weeks ago: we visited our local trout farm. Here's a few pictures from the outing!

Here's the run down: It was a little scary giving a 19 month old and a 3 year old their own fishing rods with sharp hooks at the end, but with a little assistance, they were in heaven! My fabulous sister was on hand to keep the ratio of kids to adults a little more reasonable, and it was nice to have one adult per fishing child. Our brand new "little man" slept comfortably in the stroller while we fished.

I bought a 25 cent cup of fish food- well worth the quarter! It was a feeding frenzy every time they dropped a bit in, and they loved looking at the fish!

We ended up keeping 3 fish from the adventure. The price you pay for the fishing experience depends upon the size of the fish you get. Catch and release is actually double the price of keeping the fish, so we kept the fish, and I paid the extra few bucks to have the fish master fillet them for me for easy grilling or frying later.

Total cost: $14.50

Time spent: 1 hour, plus lunch at a place with a play center afterward. It was a perfect length of time for a quick getaway and full attention spans.

Thoughts: I would definitely do it again! Four stars out of five for keeping the kids interest, and showing them the process of getting food out of the pond and onto the plate. The kids needed help pulling the fish out of the pond once they had caught them, and we had to get a little dirty while taking the hooks out of their mouths and getting them into the bucket. Bring a dirty towel and baby wipes so you don't smell like fish afterward, and be on guard for overly curious children overstepping their bounds into the ponds! The whole process was fascinating for all. Surprisingly, they weren't even nervous about having the fish get conked and gutted so we could eat them!

Favorite memory from the event: My 3-year old was very interested in the cats hanging around the fish gutting station, and kept following them into nearby trees. After we finished fishing, she asked me if we could catch a cat the same way! We had to explain that cats generally don't make for good eating. :)

Next time: We'll take a picnic lunch and eat at the tables provided by the ponds, and perhaps we'll only feed the fish. A dollar's worth of fish food would provide a lot of entertainment and almost as much excitement as the fishing experience itself!
